is the author of the novels The Lake, the River & the Other Lake (Pantheon, 2005) and Nothing but a Smile (Pantheon, 2009). His stories have appeared in Zoetrope All-Story, McSweeney’s, Playboy, Southern Review, and others and have been heard on NPR. He has taught at the MFA programs at Northwestern and Pacific Universities.
