Artist’s Statement

My focus is on the beauty and enigma of light and color.

I crave beauty, and work to reduce the visual to utter simplicity. My paintings embody a dynamic between being fully realized abstract paintings and remaining arrested gestures in a state of undoneness. Making paintings is a process of accumulating observations. The colors and gestures are markers of time and change and place.

Buddhist philosophy has taught me nothing is permanent. As homage to impermanence, I make work that shifts in appearance due to changes in light and the viewers’ location relative to the artwork. The paintings are informed by views of the ever-changing patterns of water currents and clouds I observe out my studio window overlooking the East River.

Counter to what the viewer sees, the interference and iridescent pigments are colorless; it is their ability to bend light that causes a viewer to perceive a color that’s not really there. The use of these techniques shifts the hues the viewer sees, making the artwork dynamic, reminding us life is always changing.

My supports are usually translucent to allow light to pass through the paint surface and create an interaction with the changing light in the room. At times working with “accidental colors” captured from nature and whatever surrounds me, I employ rigor and absurdity in equal measure.
