Witness

After dinner, you sneak under the hem of my shirt and lie with your head on my chest, the shell of your ear over my heart. You ask me if I believe in God, and I wonder if you’re counting the beats when I say I don’t know. I repeat it. I don’t know. I’ve always struggled with the intangible. You say it’s about faith—like love, you just feel it. I press my palms into the soft give of your back. Outside, the moon hangs like a wax seal above the mountain line, gibbous and brimming, threatening to drip onto the ridges.
