The Appointment
1 Minute Read Time

I give you a man in a waiting room,
waiting, a man so plain, so very ordinary—
gray, brown and brown, a little blue—
that were he not alone he’d be invisible.
We can see him this clearly because
there’s no one else here. He’s seated in
one of the too many identical chairs—
chrome frame, green vinyl upholstery.
Has he chosen the chair with the luck?
Now he looks around, slowly gets up,
stretches and yawns, one of those yawns
that no one believes, then chooses another,
farther away from the door to the closed
rooms beyond, sits down and sits back,
both hands squeezing the arm pads
as the chair slowly starts, idles a moment,
then accelerates into whatever’s to come.
