Artist’s Statement
For the past twenty-plus years I have worked exclusively on creating one-of-a-kind ceramic art objects—no two are exactly alike. Most of my sculptures feature unique bodies and faces woven into a distinctive art piece. My objective is to craft ceramic work that is both thought provoking and memorable.
I just love the feel of clay in my hand. I roll out the clay and have no preexisting notion of what the resulting people will look like. My creations assume their own identity. The two-headed-person design was originally meant to depict close friendship and love. My initial inspiration for creating ceramic faces and bodies came from a gallery in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. There, an artist placed heads on poles with only a small body part or piece of clothing, like a skirt or foot. I found that crafting people’s heads on a pole was a little creepy; after experimenting with different ideas I added the entire body.
